Historical Context

The region has a deep history of migration and resilience, from the Kanza, Wyandotte, and Lenape nations to serving as a refuge for freedom seekers via the Underground Railroad. The arrival of the Exodusters in 1879 and European immigrants in the 1940s established a lasting, diverse identity that persists today.

CABA’s Commitment

Despite disinvestment in the 1970s and 80s, the Central Avenue corridor continues to grow. CABA remains dedicated to this resilient community. Following our support efforts during COVID-19 and through recent challenges—including a major storm in 2024—we continue to provide leadership training, business support, and civic engagement programs.

Our work remains focused on the Central Area of East Wyandotte County, where the intersection of various cultural struggles has created an area that is economically fragile yet culturally rich and reliant on grassroots support.
